Every summer since I was seven years old, I have attended a summer camp located on Lookout Mountain in Cloudland, Georgia. This camp is called Camp Juliette Low and is a private camp for girls ages seven to seventeen. This camp was founded by Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the girl scouts, in 1922. I have now worked at this camp for four summers alongside many of my friends who also attended the camp with me. This summer will be my fifth summer working for camp. It will be a brief job as I will be getting my masters this summer and will not be able to spend as much time there. This camp was a wonderful opportunity for me as a child and still is today to get away from the busy hustle and bustle of our every day lives and "rough it in the woods" as we like to call it. Camp offers many classes such as canoeing, arts and crafts, hiking, outdoor living skills, archery, horseback, sewing, project adventure (high and low ropes course), swimming, and many more. I learned so many things going to this camp every summer such as independence, how to live with others in small spaces, how to build a fire and cook over it, how to chop wood, how to work as a team, and most importantly how to have a lot of fun in nature. I am so grateful for the opportunities that this camp has given me as a child and also as I get to be a counselor, unit leader, and program director for younger campers. I am now teaching the classes and creating the magic for the next generation. I could not think of a better way to spend my summers.
